What do great managers do? How do they get the most out of each individual? Is it all about the team? Or, is it just great companies that make great managers?

FBATR_Quote

With over twenty-five years and over a million of employee surveys by Gallup Organization researchers, Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman have put forth that talented employees need great managers to succeed and great managers go against the norm when working with employees. In their research, they pulled twelve questions that were used as “The Measuring Stick” for the data which developed into this book. They gave every manager a new set of questions to ask his or her self and their staff. It does not stop there. It ask managers to look at the talent, not skills or experiences, of employees. There is a chapter in the book entitled Tales of Transformation “Why is it so tempting to try and fix people” and it looks at how we have been telling people you can be anything you want to be. You just have to keep working harder and harder. For years managers have tried to develop plans for employees to improve those areas of weakness or learn other team members’ responsibilities so they become more valuable to the company. Managers try to transform employees into something that they were not.

What Buckingham and Coffman found out was that great managers did not try and transform their employees they did what was unconventional. There is a chapter in the book entitled Spend the Most Time with Your Best People and it is has challenges to see where you are spending your time. Why do great manager have favorite employees? They spent time finding the right talent for the task and then went about building a strong relationship, set expectations, motivating, reviewing them frequently and most of all developing each person’s strengths.

From the beginning to the end of the book you will find yourself saying I do that by the standards set before, but if you want to become a great manager you must “First, Break The Rules”. This book gives you many great ideas to implement. It does not give you step one and so on, you must use your strengths, and develop a unique plan to work with each employee you are responsible for. Remember they are counting on you!

After this book Marcus Buckingham has written four follow up books to help us along the way. They are as follows;

Rules, rules rules, that is all Allie can talk about. When she goes she writes in her journal all the rules she learns. But in this case she has to learn that sometimes you have to do things and look at the good side of it.

Allie is being forced to moveto a house that she thinks is haunted. The only good side about this is because she is being promised a kitten. Other than that she does not like the idea. She doesn’t want to go to a new school and have to make good friends. Well, there might be a chance for her to write new rules. She has some very funny ones like don’t stick a spatula down your best friends throat. She likes her old house because it is close to school. The best part is at her old house she could walk to the ice cream store. Isn’t that cool or what! I wish i had that house.

This is a great book for kids young and old. It is very touching and teaches a great lesson. I think it is a great book. Once you read the first one you will have to read the rest of the series.
